Welcome to Karlovy Vary, the town of healing springs, famous balneology, rich history, beautiful architecture and scenery. This world-famous spa lies in the valley of the River Tepla near its confluence with the River Ohre. The town was founded in 1350 by the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV.

The development of the town was always connected with the curative effects of the local mineral springs. At the biginning of the 19th century, thanks to pharmacist V. Payer z Lokte, water from the springs has been taken internally, drunk for its mineral content. Today the spa treatment includes the drinking the water, the classic healing procedures involving external application and bathing, and modern physical therapy. For the drinking cures there are used 13 mineral springs with the temperature from 42°C till 73°C the hottest spring the Sprudel spouts till 15 m high.

The natural curative resources (hot mineral springs, natural gas, mud, etc.) are used in the combination with the latest medical methods for the treatment of: digestive diseases, metabolic disorders, parodontosis, diseases of the muscular and skelet system. These days Karlovy Vary is the most renowned and frequented of all spas in the Czech Republic. Its look today has been mainly influenced by late the 19th century design in the style of historicism and later art nouveau. The most remarkable historical sights in Karlovy Vary include the square Castle tower which is the remains of a little castle from around 1350, the Orthodox st. Peter and Paul's Church which is an imitation of a Byzantine temple and St. Mary Magdalene's church which was built by the famous K. I. Diezenhofer in the 18th century.

Karlovy Vary is well-known by its traditional production: glass Moser, porcelain Thun, herbs liquer Becherovka, mineral water Mattoni, mineral salt, curative cosmetics, souvenirs from sprudel stone.

There is also possibility visiting of cultural programmes and concerts. Many cultural events of the international importance take place in Karlovy Vary every year. We can mention the International Jazz Festival, or Tourfilm — the world's oldest festival of films on tourism, but mainly the International Film Festival, which brings many famous movie stars into the town every year.
