Welcome to Karlovy Vary, the town of healing springs, famous balneology, rich history, beautiful architecture and scenery. This world-famous spa lies in the valley of the River Tepla near its confluence with the River Ohre. The town was founded in 1350 by the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV.

The development of the town was always connected with the curative effects of the local mineral springs. At the biginning of the 19th century, thanks to pharmacist V. Payer z Lokte, water from the springs has been taken internally, drunk for its mineral content. Today the spa treatment includes the drinking the water, the classic healing procedures involving external application and bathing, and modern physical therapy. For the drinking cures there are used 13 mineral springs with the temperature from 42°C till 73°C the hottest spring the Sprudel spouts till 15 m high.

Before the First World War, at the time of the «golden era» of Karlsbad, the first project in the spirit of architectural modernism was realised in the building of a spa facility.

The series of Castle Colonnades was build in the heart of the spa town, in the place of the most valuable mineral springs. One of the fundamental ideas of the building work was to link the colonnade near the Upper Castle Spring with the Market Colonnade, and to build a dignifield home for the «Patron of the Springs», who over the centuries had guard over all the natural curative resources of the town.
